Congratulations – you survived January! Give yourself a pat on the back for successfully getting through:
- The post-Christmas blues and mince pie/mulled wine/Christmas songs withdrawal
- Dark, dreary mornings WITHOUT a Christmas tree glowing in the corner making everything a little bit magic
- The seemingly never-ending and horrendous countdown ’til payday
We’ve made it through the fog of a cold, broke January and it feels damn good to be out the other side. I don’t know about you but I didn’t start the year feeling too fresh – January felt hectic, dark and far too long for my liking. Now though, I’m ready to switch my energy up and embrace the new month ahead!
I want to get in to the habit of setting monthly intentions. I use the word intentions over ‘goals’ because goals seem like something you must strive toward and hit. ‘Goal’ is a strong word and just reminds me of a football hurtling toward a net! ‘Intention’ feels much more positive – something you move softly toward with no sense of urgency or fear of failure.
My intentions for this month revolve around ‘fullness’. I’m sure you’ve heard the expression before:
“You can’t pour from an empty cup”
It basically sums up how I felt in January. My cup felt empty! This month, I want to work on filling myself up in order to be able to give the best of myself.
What makes you feel full? For me, it’s a number of things and implementing a combination of these things, often, makes for a happier Siân…but do I make time for them? Nowhere near enough as I should!! Life is busy. February is about bringing more of these things to the front of my routine.
My first step in focusing my intentions was working out what I need more of in my life. My ‘fullness’ boosters: seeing my best friends, music, walks and being in nature, drawing/creating something, having a bath, reading, a freshly clean/tidied house, exploring new places, being near water, intimate meals out, feeling the sun on my face – I couldn’t write them all of course but they centre around feeling connected and calm. Sadly, the only thing I manage to frequently add to my routine is the cleaning!!
Two other things that make me feel incredibly full – yoga and meditation. When I was at uni, I used to meditate every day for at least 10 minutes. I got to a point where I was so positive and so happy that I remember thinking one day ‘how will I ever be unhappy again? I’ll never lose this feeling of calm!’. How wrong I was!
This February, I will slowly fill my glass by practicing the things that bring me wholeness. By embellishing my routine with these little boosters, I know I’ll be able to give more of myself – to my relationships, my work, my creativity. Investing in ‘you’ might seem selfish but truly, it’ll benefit everyone and everything around you. When you feel at your best, it’ll flow in to every other area of your life.
So far this week, I’ve done yoga, had a bubble bath AND meditated…I already feel miles better for it and I’ve noticed my average heart rate decrease on my FitBit!
